Severe diaper dash is upsetting for both baby and Mom. Most babies suffer at some time during infancy, but a severe case is both worrying for the parent and painful for the baby.
Red skin and scaling is a sign of diaper rash. In severe cases a bleeding diaper rash or diaper rash blisters may occur. Always consult your doctor in case there is an infection or if the baby is under six weeks old.

There are a number of possible causes of diaper rash.

Leaving the baby too long in a soiled diaper means the acid in the urine or faeces can burn. Diapers do vary in shape and an ill-fitting diaper may rub. Baby may also be allergic to a particular brand of diaper. Problems can be solved by changing baby frequently and using a different brand if necessary. If possible avoid using plastic pants as they could make the baby hotter and rub around the leg.

Baby may also be allergic to a cleanser. Wash the baby using clear water each time a diaper is changed and avoid scented wipes. Use a diaper cream to help protect the skin. Leave the diaper off as much as possible to allow the skin to dry and the rash to heal.

There are a number of diaper creams on the market. A pure lanolin or a zinc oxide based cream will soothe a mild rash and there are non-prescription creams for more severe cases. If a rash for persists for longer than a few days, or is blistered or bleeding, consult your doctor.
